Alberta Team Updates

FOK Alberta signed onto the Healthy Environments for Learning Day (HELD) initiative to support the shift to electric school buses.

Here's what Claire wrote about why it is so important for us to be part of this initiative: 

"As a parent of two, I am increasingly concerned about the air my children breathe. Here in Western Canada, we have experienced devastating wildfire seasons where the air is thick with smoke. Some days in Calgary, we experience pollution hanging low over the city. We must recognize the impact of air quality on our children's health and well-being. Electric buses provide a cleaner mode of transportation, emitting no harmful pollutants. They make the air safer for all - pedestrians, boarders, and bikers - and are a critical health and climate solution we can deploy now. Parents in our network are proud to be part of this initiative, and we will do what we can to achieve the goal of having all-electric school buses by 2040." Claire Kraatz with the For Our Kids Alberta team 

 

Are you passionate about the physical and mental health of children and the health of our planet? We think that electric school buses show you care about all three. For Our Kids Alberta is working on advocating to school boards and transportation companies to encourage them to go electric with their next bus purchase.

If you think electric school buses are too good to be true, I can assure you they are not. We already have one in operation here in Alberta in Parkland County. I called them myself to see how it works in our prairie winters and they had nothing but good things to say about it.

We would love your help! All you have to do is find an electric school bus champion from your local school board and either continue to work with them on advocacy or put them in touch with the For Our Kids Alberta team. We appreciate whatever level of involvement you want to have because we know that every step towards climate justice, no matter the size, is important.
